Villa Nueva is a municipality in the Guatemala department of Guatemala. Villa Nueva is located south of Guatemala City and has a population of 710,218 people,〔http://world-gazetteer.com/wg.php?x=&men=gcis&lng=en&des=gamelan&srt=pnan&col=abcdefghinoq&msz=1500&geo=-93〕 making it the second largest city in Guatemala Department, after Guatemala City. It was founded on 17 April 1763, long before Guatemala declared its independence from the Spanish Empire. The local economy largely depends on industry, with the municipality having some 25 factories that produce such products as textiles, metallurgical goods, and plastics. The area's agricultural products include rice, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. Mayor Salvador Gándara, serving from 2000 to 2011, was longlisted for the 2008 World Mayor award;〔(【引用サイトリンク】publisher=CityMayors.com ).〕 but afterwards he had run ins with the law.〔 He served nine months in prison for allegedly embezzled fund from Villa Nueva municipality and then, after being involved in a corruption scandal after he was secretary of the Interior under president Alvaro Colom, he was prevented from running for Villa Nueva mayor in both 2011 and 2015. He was sent to prison once again on 1 October 2015 with fraud and conspiracy charges due to his involvement with a fraudulent construction of the maximum security prison Fraijanes 2 after we was unable to pay the 15 million quetzals bail. ==History==
